how to prepare for engagement photos

Like I mentioned in my first post, it’s so important to plan ahead for your upcoming engagement shoot. Trust me, a little planning goes a long way. Of course there’s the usual “wear coordinating colors” and “bring props,” but here are some not-so-obvious tips.
  1. Consider time of year. This is absolutely critical. In our case, we got engaged in May in Texas and I figured I'd take my sweet time figuring things out. Well, once I finally found my wedding photog she kindly reminded me that we were already experiencing highs of 90+ degrees in Dallas. Let's just say she had to do some serious work to not make us look sweaty!
  2. His outfit. I laid my outfit out days in advance, asked opinions of friends, etc. My fiance is usually very put-together, so I didn't feel the need to hassle him about his outfit choice. Boy, do I wish I had! The morning of I'm rushing to get ready as he says, "Did you take my stuff to the dry cleaner?" Wonderful!
  3. Get dolled up! Now is not the time to skimp on hair/makeup/spray tan. I always wear makeup but even I felt like it was a little "much!" I'm so glad I chose the eyelashes (see great close-up, overhead shots below.
  4. Cheers! The biggest mistake we made was not taking the time to have a cocktail beforehand per our photographer's suggestion. I'm not very comfortable in front of the camera and Alex is even more reserved. Next time we'll know better (especially while wrangling dogs)!
  5. Bring a helper. As awkward as it seems, it would have been extremely helpful to bring along someone to help with the dogs, props, etc. We posed with the dogs first to avoid them having a meltdown, but had to walk back to the car to leave the pups in the air-conditioned car while carrying blankets (for ground photos), water, phones, etc.

Even with the extreme heat and crazy dogs, our photographer did a great job. Take a look at some of our favorite shots below!
